Hi! I am Lesia Duda, the founder of the "Tsvit" school

PhD, sociolinguist, and Ukrainian mum living abroad
The idea of creating an international online school started with my first lectures in 2013. This was followed by Ukrainian lessons for adults and younger students, international projects to survey Ukraine's language policy, and video projects about linguocide and children's language.

In this photo, you can find my daughter Khrystia sitting next to me. A year before the full-scale war, Radio Svoboda called her "the youngest teacher of Ukrainian for preschoolers". Today, Khrystia is also a student at the "Tsvit" school.

I am sure that Ukrainian children, who are today called 'children of the war', are in fact 'children of the Victory' — the Victory of a renewed Ukraine. These children are the current blossom of the Ukrainian nation.

Let’s create the #blossom_of_the_nation together!

Our Mission

We all share a common responsibility to preserve the Ukrainian identity of our children who live abroad these days!

What does "Tsvit" mean?

The first meaning of the word "tsvit" in Ukrainian embodies the process of natural development and growth of plants that will eventually bear fruit. In its second meaning, "tsvit" refers to the best people in a particular social environment. That is why we have the expression: "Our tsvit is all over the world..."

Today, because of the war, hundreds of thousands of Ukrainians are fleeing their homes to save the lives of their children and to rebuild Ukraine with renewed strength.

Therefore, our mission is to help Ukrainian children preserve their national identity through the study of culture, language and literature.

After all, our children are the current tsvit of the Ukrainian nation, which will live in a peaceful and prosperous Ukraine.

Eva likes it very much, she has fun, she would run to the lesson, sometimes I forget about the lesson, she reminds me - 'Mum, lesson'. She has learnt "Shchedryk", she sings, she has learnt the national anthem and every time she watches TV she sings along with the TV.
It is very important for me that she knows where I come from, where her grandmother is from, where her grandfather is from. It is important for me to instil my culture in her, even though I am still learning everything myself. She is Japanese with Ukrainian roots, I can't give her Japanese (her environment gives her that), but I have to give her Ukrainian so that she can understand me and not shy away from me, as other adult children often do. I want her to find that balance between the two cultures and be able to combine them in herself and be proud of her two countries.

We are grateful to the "Tsvit" school, because we know, that learning the Ukrainian language is a key to the preservation of Ukrainian culture and state! And Ukraine is a land of fairness, love and strength, a land of heroes, a land of patriots! Ukraine is the treasure trove and the heart of humanity! Let's honor and learn the Ukrainian language! I believe that "Tsvit" will become a strong checkpoint on today's linguistic background. I believe in the power of the Language. I believe in Ukrainians, in the Armed Forces and in our common Victory! Let's create the blossom of the nation together! 💛

My son can't sit still for even one minute, so Zoom lessons seemed impossible. But Ukrainian language lessons online are very important to us, as other opportunities for communication are limited now. We have tried several other teaching methods for young children, but we liked the "Tsvit" school the best. The lessons are very interactive, the program is interesting for children, and the teachers use innovative approaches rather than outdated methods. We highly recommend it, and the first lessons are free of charge, so be sure to try it!
